Appearance
Soul's most noticeable features are probably his spiky white hair and razor sharp teeth. When you look a little closer, you notice that he has red eyes and is rather athletic, too. He is usually seen wearing a black and yellow coat, hands often in his pockets, red pants, and sneakers. He also wears a white headband with various decorations on it, one of which is a red tag bearing his name. Lately, however, Soul's been wearing a black long sleeve shirt with a T-shirt underneath and jeans. His large headband has been replaced by a slimmer black one that, to be completely honest, is only there for looks, since it doesn't really hold his hair back.

Personality
Dr. Stein once described Soul Eater as "a twisted person with a sarcastic soul." This is indeed true, as shown many times while he is with Maka. As her weapon, he cares deeply for her, and will do whatever he can to protect her, even if it means losing his life. But he only shows this in those life-or-death fights he and Maka seem to attract; otherwise, he usually has an extremely sarcastic and sometimes even antagonistic attitude toward her and most around him. He will occasionally relent in his cracks, however, if he thinks or knows something is wrong or bothering her.

The twisted portion of Dr. Stein's assessment is shown readily as well, the earliest example being his scheme in the fight with Blair: he seemingly betrayed Maka, only to reveal moments later that he would never leave his meister – it was an "uncool" thing to do. He often does such impulsive - and potentially hurtful - things without telling her, and teasing is one of his favorite pastimes.

Soul is, of course, a "cool" weapon, infatuated with his idea of coolness. This usually involves taking a very direct approach to most things, a tactic that fails him more often than not. He has a strong will, however, and is very capable of staying in control and holding both Maka and himself in the realm of sanity, once even bringing his meister back from madness.

Abilities
As a weapon, Soul can transform into his scythe form when he wishes, and just as easily change back. He is also capable of turning his arm or hand into the scythe's blade at will. Soul Eater, as a weapon, can absorb souls by eating them (hence the name) and play the piano (he didn't grow up in a family of musicians for nothing!).

In Daisychain, Soul will have to put in quite a bit of effort to transform, and as such will be unable to transform his arm into a blade, although he will be capable of turning into a full scythe – meaning he can only maintain one form at a time, not portions of two. And although the black blood that invaded his body during the initial fight with Ragnarok and Crona gave him an energy boost, he will have lost that and will be weaker than he was before that battle. He will also be slightly more susceptible to the symbolic demon within his mind – better known to some as insanity.

Weaknesses
Soul Eater is incapable of attacking on his own; he has to be in weapon form, wielded by a meister, in order to perform any attacks. In Manhattan, he won't even be able to turn his arm into a blade. He has noted that he has a certain fear of being close to others, and so he keeps himself fairly distant from those around him, with only a few exceptions. He is extremely dedicated to his meister, so much so that he is willing to die for her – and that self-sacrificing state of mind can be considered both a strength and weakness.

Manhattanite or outsider?
Outsider

History
Soul Eater is part of the Evans family, a (presumably rich) family of musicians. As such, he learned to play the piano growing up while his older brother, Wes, became a violinist. Soul is the only member of the Evans with the capability of becoming a weapon; therefore, he is the only one that attends Shibusen.

When he met Maka, he played her a dark song on the piano. He later agreed to become her weapon, and together they vowed to make Soul the most powerful death scythe.

While at Shibusen, they gathered all of the 99 souls required to become a death scythe. When it came to getting the final, witch's soul, however, they didn't realize that they had been fighting a cat, and therefore had to begin anew.

One of their extra-curricular assignments was to collect a soul of someone in Italy. They successfully completed the task, but they confronted Crona, a meister who harbored his weapon, Ragnarok, inside his (her?) body. Soul was severely wounded during the battle and contracted Crona's black blood, granting him a power boost.

Shinigami later hosted a party celebrating the creation of Shibusen. The cheerful atmosphere was uprooted when the witch Medusa and her lackeys set a spell on the party area, locking the meisters and their weapons in a different dimension for what was supposed to be an hour. Sid, however, managed to let a handful of them escape to fight the threat, Soul being one of them.

Soul fought with Maka against Crona once more, this time claiming victory as he saved them from insanity. Staying in scythe form, he and his meister raced to try to stop Asura from resurrecting. They arrived late, but they still pursued, failing to actually do anything. When Maka was knocked unconscious, Soul held her and watched the fight between Asura and Shinigami, all the while wishing he could do more to protect her.

Their most recent assignment took them to a village famous for building golems, where they discovered a witch - Arachne - was being harbored for nearly 800 years. They were defeated by her and her weapon bodyguard - and were later rescued by Justin. Immediately after that, Soul was required to take care of his meister after she had been caught by a spell that prevented her from moving. After the first night of this, he went to sleep, and woke up in Manhattan.
